Stable Surf System Revealed

How our “Stable Surf System” WILL
increase your wave count… starting on day one!

Stable Surf Systemtm is our unique combination of concaves (bottom conture), rails (sides), nose shapes, tail shapes, rocker and other surfboard elements, all working together to make the most stable, versatile, and maneuverable surfboards available. So how did we come up with Stable Surf System or S3? Kind of by accident…

I was out one day surfing with my buddy Chet. Now Chet is fairly new to surfing, I mean, he can stand up and go down the line, but that’s about it. Anyways, he was surfing on a typical low cost, zero technology, standard template longboard surfboard, and he was struggling to catch ANY waves.

Well, it just so happened that I was out there testing a new longboard shape that we were considering adding to our lineup and after watching him struggle, I decided to let him have a go at the board I was riding. And this is where something remarkable happened.

He proceeded to catch not only the VERY NEXT WAVE he paddled for, but every wave there after as well. Now keep in mind he’s a new surfer, so needless to say I was amazed the board made that big of a difference.

So why did it make such a big difference?

Surfboards that are more stable and more maneuverable… the cornerstone to Degree33 Surfboards S3 technology

S3tm technology consists of concaves, rails, nose and tail shapes all working together to make a superior surfboard. S3 surfboards are some of the most stable on the market.

This is especially important when you’re learning to surf because you don’t have the finer balance and technique skills down yet, and the board will help you by compensating for your weaknesses. A stable surfboard doesn’t have to mean it lacks maneuverability though.

In Fact, it’s quite the opposite. Because of what we’ve done to the bottom concave, rails, and rocker, S3 surfboards handle like fine Italian sports cars. So if you’ve had a decade in the water, you won’t be disappointed either. For example, look at the picture below. See the bottom concaves and beveled rails? This is a classic example of one our new S3 Surfboards called “The Ultimate”.

S3tm surfboards are versatile

Any time you buy a new surfboard you are worried about getting the right one for what you are trying to do with it. If you’re a beginner, you want a board that is going to be brain dead easy to learn on BUT you don’t want to have to buy another one as soon as you get the hang of it.

Our surfboards are not only some of the most stable surfboards and therefor easy to learn on but they allow for simple skills progression. A key that saves you money in the long run.

If you’re a seasoned surfer, S3tm will provide some of the best rides you’ve ever had. When you combine ease of paddling and float, with insane handling, you get a surfboard you’ll never want to let anyone borrow. Maneuverability, stability, paddling, and float, regardless of where your surf skills are, those are the 4 corners to surfing greatness.

Hopefully this clears up some of the cobwebs. Both myself and my friends have made dramatic improvements in our surfing this last year because of S3. Hopefully it can do the same for you. Please leave a comment and let me know what you think. S3 should be ready to launch in a few days so stay tuned.

I bought a 9′0″ when it was a prototype and I can honestly say it is the best board I’ve ever riden hands down. It makes sweeping turns, carves like the best, handles late take off like a fish, catches almost anything and is damn forgiving. I am stoked!

That’s right Brian! I remember I had one of our test boards left when you came in. I’m glad you’re backing me up on it being one of the best boards you’ve ever ridden because I know that’s the case for me. Glad you’re stoked on it. Cheers.

If anybody has any questions please feel free to leave them here.

This technology sounds pretty exciting. Will this be combined with the new generation epoxy you have been talking about? What size boards will we see both these new technologies? How about prices…will you have to raise them? By the way, I’ve been loving my 8′6″ mermaid mini-longboard!

    Sign me up!

A couple months ago, I posted a rather lengthy comment on your site about the perils of selling clothing–especially in this market. I love what you guys do, you have a passion for surfing coupled with a mountain of expertise, and you’re developing a strong business using those skills as a basis and motivator. It’s the classic winning combination for a successful business that is enjoyable to own and run. Your marketing is easy because you know and love surfing; people get excited about the sport just hearing you talk about it.

When you’re talking about this new board, I could feel the adrenaline rush! In spite of the half foot of snow outside here in the northeast, I was visualizing standing in chest deep water watching for waves…

This is a board to share… to ride yourself and lend to friends–experts and novices, alike. This board is the ambassador of surfing… the one that gives others a taste of the thrill of the sport and makes them want to either be surfers, or improve their own skills.

Go for it, guys. If this board is everything you describe it to be, you’ve got a winner. Best of luck to both of you!

This is what I have been waiting for. I have been surfing for over 30+ years I’m now 56 yrs old. I have been out of the water for the past 3 years I want to start back up again on the S3. Iam looking to buy a new board in mid feb 09.

    Good Job

i was wondering about the new tech will you guys be making all your boards in the new styles. i know that u said that there will be a S3 and a i think NextGen epoxy; my question is that will all your boards have like 4 options now of fiberglass, epoxy, S3, and NextGen or will it be like certain boards w/ certain shapes will be S3 and special for the NextGen or like only the new boards will be in the new technology? thanks

  12. Doug on Thu, 29th Jan 2009 9:15 am

Hey Luc, do you know what sizes and what tail shapes you’ll be producing? What type of surf are these boards best in? Do you know when you’ll have more pictures up? Will be coming down in March for a VB tourny looking to possible pick one up when I’m down. Thanks Doug

  13. adolfo on Thu, 29th Jan 2009 9:46 am

    Cool! how about a 5′10 or 6′0 s3?

  14. Jerry Lewis on Thu, 29th Jan 2009 10:34 am

Luc; I really like the picture on the blog. How long before a 10′0″ may be available and how much? Let’s see, if I start asking now maybe my wife will cave by the time they are available…….

Alright here are some answers to your questions.

    1. S3 vs. NexGen - S3 is a design feature in which we use differnet elements to make a more manuerverable and stable board. NexGen is a construction improvement that combines the benfits of epoxy with the benefits of poly. Not all boards will have S3 (I have 3-4 shapes that will have S3) and not all boards will have NexGen (the only boards that will come standard in NexGen will be shortboards but anything can be custom made in NexGen).

    2. S3 shapes will consist of a new: Longboard, Mini Longboard, Funboard, and shortboard. We will also be launching (hopefully by June) another new longboard (so that would be 2 new longboard shapes), a new hybrid fish, and another new shortboard.

3.All new shapes to launch from here on out will have S3. Current models probably wont unless we can make some design mods to them.

If I have missed your question or I didn’t answer it like you were hoping feel free to post it again and I will try and clarify. Thanks for your feedback.

By the way, for those of you wondering, the board picture above is the bottom of our new longboard/mini longboard. We call in the “Ultimate”.

  17. Dennis McClure on Thu, 29th Jan 2009 1:13 pm

A flat bottom is faster. A longer board catches more waves. An easier turning board helps you retain your balance. Concaves can track or suck down on the water and thus are harder to turn. Maybe a good idea for snowboards.

  18. Bubba on Thu, 29th Jan 2009 3:09 pm

Are your NextGen boards gonna be as heavy as your current line? You can not even compare any of the boards you sell to, let’s say Surftech or Firewire products. Recently I got a Stretch F4 TL2 6′3″ and it weights 3 times less then your 6′ something Quad Fish.

  19. Luc on Thu, 29th Jan 2009 3:34 pm

Dennis- A flat bottom is fast but only after you get the board planing (until then is actually creates more suction than a board with concaves), an easier turning board 9 times out of 10 is not more stable and not easier to balance, and concaves, in this case, make the board turn easier, more stable and paddle faster, that’s what makes S3 unique. The concaves that we are putting on our boards make them faster, more stable, turn better, and paddle faster than your traditional surfboard. If you don’t believe me, get one. I promise what I am telling you is the truth.

Bubba- Yes the NexGen boards are ridiculously lighter than our standard epoxy. Lighter than a Tuflite, and the same as a TL2 or Firewire. Come check them out, they are supper light.

wow! I’m excited! maybe I’ll pull the trigger and buy instead of riding the fence. My brother and I have been looking around for a good beginers board. he keeps talkin about those cheap costco boards but I want something a little more substance…
Hurry! I can’t wait to show him!

it’s always exciting to see some breakthroughs in surfing. sounds like this is a significant one. please show us more photos of whatever you’ve got now in the S3 line up!

I really like the new stable surf system a lot! Since I will be moving to San Diego in 3 weeks, I will be in need of a board that suites my current level (which is years of snowboarding and about a week of surfing under my belt). Everything looks great and I will be visiting the store for my first purchase.

Surfing has often intrigued me, and someday I will probably try it. It is good to know that there is a board out there like the S3 to help us older, but new, surfers. Unfortunately, all I can find out here on the east coast are hand shaped ($$$$) boards and the made in china factory boards.

  25. Luc on Mon, 2nd Feb 2009 9:28 pm

S3 is a system that several of our models have. Off the top of my head I know S3 comes with the:

-Ultimate, Lily Pad, Flyin Fish, Pivot Fish

We are trying to incorporate S3 into all our shapes but haven’t yet. There will be more shapes to launch before the summer time also.

  26. Kimberly on Tue, 3rd Feb 2009 4:58 pm

Sounds awesome! I like it a lot. I was starting off by just renting boards so I could save money, but with the S3, I can’t wait for it to come out! I’m so stoked!

Luc, i read your story about yur buddie Chet and i’m in the same situation..some days i catch waves, somedays i dont. im interested in your s3 line. it may be just the long board for me.. thanx…Ray

I was just in SD at san Elijo for a week. My son in law and I tried to get in touch with you. We wanted to see your new boards. You might want to make it easier to get in touch with you. We did get to watch Rob Machado and friend doing 360’s on a short skinny board with no skegs.

  30. phil on Sun, 3rd May 2009 9:14 am

what size waves are rideable for the rapid fire shortboard that you make

  31. Luc on Sun, 3rd May 2009 7:14 pm

It has a decent volume so probably waist up to several feet overhead.

  32. mike on Mon, 23rd Nov 2009 4:11 pm

how will your board compair to a firewire board

  33. Luc on Fri, 15th Jan 2010 2:17 pm

Our NexGen Epoxy is really similar. It obviously lacks the parabolic rails that Firewire has but from my understanding those don’t do anything… resin is too hard. We do use the same resin as a Firewire.

I started surfing here about 3 months ago after taking the two weekend course at the MBAC. I picked up a 9′ soft-top before that Was heavy but held me up fine just before me and my girlfriend took the course. I bought an 8′6″ Ultimate a couple weekends ago and have surfed once with it at blacks. This board feelt initially almost too fast for me but the class got us up on boards and that was all I needed to actually feel very comfortable with my new board after only about an hour one day a weekend.

From what I have read and looked at and priced you guys seem to be doing a fine business producing what I think will be a great board for me.

I have picked up surfing over the past few months and it looks like it will become more enjoyable.
    Thanks.
